some more garb to the garbage bin

wondering how need based we have become..
world dawns on us right from the time we open our eyes in the morning til we hit the sack..thousands of thoughts surround us ... keep emanating like a never ending waves in the sea...its desires..desires ...desires...goals..needs....dos...wants..musts...wah wah wah!!! just this range of desires vary..a businessman is worried abt his tax returns....and a beggar abt a next meal.. sometimes i think we have all been automated beings and become slaves of thinking abt needs..one might argue that its quite natural for beings like us to be worried abt our needs..after all we need to survive..well yes!! but in this very process we forget whats "life"...i dont agree that life is just this - this constant yearning and fight to survive here.. sure..some needs like food and shelter are indeed something to be concerned upon..probably if i talk abt this to a person whose basic needs are at stake..he might prolly get really mad at me...but this is pointed to an average man.. we have lost the idea how to live in peace..we seem to have forgotten whats peaceful life thats so content..so fulfilled... the yearning for something is what is the culprit here.. we dont give ourselves fully for what we are at that moment.. we try to swim instead of floating as osho says..

Nivedan's Tips on Harmonica - Types of Harmonica

Initially, my friends played notes one by one patiently on keyboard or guitar and let me find that note in the Harmonica by trial and error until I got it. After regular practice, I started to play songs once I heard them. But note that I could play only C scale. Maybe this is the best way for a novice to learn that. All you need is a keyboardist with loads of patience.

Normal ones do not play more than one scale. Getting a practice piece in C scale itself was quite an achievement in madurai :D But later, when my brother went to Germany, when he was with Siemens, he got me a professional piece. It is a chromatic harmonica which is tuned to C scale by default, but you can play all scales by pushing a small button to close full notes to access half notes that do not find place in C scale. Let me explain this. There is an inhale note and an exhale note in a harmonica. In Chromonica there are two pairs of such reeds in a hole. With the button in normal position you can play one set of notes and with the button pushed, you can play half notes in the same holes. But I had no time or motivation to practice with that. It will take years of practice to learn that.

I had used three harmonicas before. The first one was a c scale practice piece by Matth Hohner called "Puck". It is tiny and has plastic comb (The core that forms the holes). It was the easiest of all to play. You need not strain much and it is too sensitive to the air. The notes sound great. As a beginner you won't be exhausted fast. But the disadvantage is, it is too small to hold. The air you blow won't seep through the joints between the comb and the metal covers (That is essential if you wan't to create effects like the 'wah-wah' effect (CHECKOUT THE SITE- www.harmonicalessons.com to learn playing it and create modulations. It helped me long time back. I hope the site still exists) . So, it will sound loud and it will be easy to play, but the modulations won't sound professional.

My second Harmonica was a semi-pro C scale Matth Hohner Blues Harp. It was the only piece that I used on stages. It won't sound as good as puck as long as you do not know the basics. It has a solid wooden comb and it is good to hold and make great modulations. If you shift to this from Puck, you should do atleast 3 hrs of practice, otherwise you will be a flop on stage, with loss of breath. It requires more energy to blow, but it sounds great with acoustic guitar on a professional microphone and amplified speakers.

The last one is a pucca professional piece- Matth Hohner Chromonica. Unfortunately, as I told earlier, I don't have time and motivation to play that. It is also too hard to play and one has to practice atleast 4-6 hrs everyday. If ever you want to learn that, my suggestion is not to buy a wooden combed professional piece. Get something like the Puck. It is cheap (I got it for Rs. 650 sever years ago). If you do not have a keyboardist, listen to songs and try to practice (Titan watch music was the first song I practised- It took me 3 days to identify the notes).

Nivedan's Tips on Harmonica - the basics

Try to start from the basics.

Holding, playing and precautionary measures

1. Hold the harmonica from the left side, with the thumb below and the rest of the fingers above.
2. The right hand should be in the shape of C and should cover the opening in the back and closing the gap behind, so that the air does not escape so easily.
3. Do not blow it hard, you may end up damaging the reeds
4. Make the metal cover above and below the holes wet so that it will be easy to move it around
5. When you keep it inside the case, tap the holes upon your palm gently, so that the saliva/dust does not stay in it.

Practicing

1. Practice blowing/inhaling in one hole. Multiple notes should not come out. Remember that you have to play pieces. Blowing notes together will play chords. So one note at a time. It will take atleast 3 days to do that.

2. Secondly, be patient, do not overdo things on the first day. Play for a minute, take rest for a minute. Do this again and again and increase the time you play before resting. On the first day, I did it with over enthusiasm for five hours continuously and fainted. The next day, when I inhaled I felt as if someone had placed huge rocks on the chest. It requires some breathing exercise to play continuously.

3. Once you start playing in one hole at a time, try to do pitch bending. I mean, practice transition from one note to the other i.e inhale to exhale as well as one hole to the other, until you get it right without ending up in more than one hole at a time and until the transition becomes smooth.

4. Then start practising a piece in the default scale of your instrument (Without button press, it should be C) Practice it everyday and do not try different pieces. You should play that for four to six hours everyday. Musician's life's not so easy. I worked for 5 hours everyday without fail to qualify myself for a stage. Our guitarist Benin practiced from 3.00 to 3.00 (college hours- 08.30 - 01.10) to start as a novice all the way to play in a professional band in 2 years. If you see full time professionals you will go mad.

5. Once you can play the first tune without any blemishes including searching for note, playing wrong notes, loss of breath, etc, go for the next piece/song.

6. If you want to get a spot on a stage, 5 hours is not enough. For on-stage programmes, we forget brushing teeth to going to class, mess and even tea, atleast 20 days b4 the programme. We practice around 15-16 hrs. Singing on stage is easier. But you will initially go out of breath on stage even after rigorous practice. So breath management is very important, otherwise the fellow musicians will go past you while you gasp. You will need to plan when to draw air while playing without affecting the pieces.

Chromonica!! My new toy!

Make : Hohner company of Germany
Scale: C major 10 holes

I bought this Beautiful instrument in Poland - Gdansk! The moment i saw a music shop, i saw some glittering harmonicas displayed.. I cannot stop from deciding to grab one! I picked almost every piece (thanks to the patient shopkeeper) and started blowing...! Somehow the timbre of this one attracted me so much..sooner my friends joined me in the shop to help me decide a good one. I used to play one, their job was to nod yes or no...and now was the time for chromonica...there was a big YES nod from them...they liked it too :D alright! thats it! i the next moment i was in the billing counter so much excited abt my new harmonica. Thanks to my freind Nivedan who told me once about his passion for harmonica when i got myself an ocarina ( ocarina takes back seat for sometime :) ) the most unique characteristic of this one is its ability to play half notes. In the picture, one could see a push button at the end which does all the wonders. Once the push button is pressed it plays half notes which gives more option for the player to experiment! Overall an awesome piece and a great sound :)

This is also a unique combo of wind and reed! :)

Adios

P.S. Nivedan has shared with me some of his knowledge about harmonicas which i generously would like to share for all music lovers.

My last night in sweden ........SIGH!

months have passed so soon! i still remember the day when I hopped out of the bus which took us from copenhagen to Lund...a snowy damp cold janauray night.... 5 .5 months flew like anything !!! I have never felt so close to any place...the longest i ever stayed in a place..was mylapore..i liked the locality nut never got emotioanllly attached to it..i always believed in shifting places like nomads and never got so close to any place...though i liked many places...but for past one week...the very idea of leaving lund have been eating my mind!!! may be becos this was the first place which altogether taught what it is to "live by oneself"...the most kiddish things i ever wanted to try in life...how is it to be in a house...gave me the feel of independence..the feel of belongingness..a sense of individuality and freedom. i have enjoyed my solitude a lot here! the view outside my window..the butifl pigeons and sparrows coming to fetch their food everyday...the dew drops taht i get to see in the lawn every morning...the localbus rides..(drivers here im sure will not survive a single day in chennai traffic :D), the kind, frank, easygoing swedish, their unique way of speaking english :D..our class in hydrosfaren...the city centre..with so many nice butiful shops...boutulfsplatsen(which i manage to pronounce like the swedish themselves..:P), the wonderful classes on system analysis and my time with mark and ellen :D..my cykel rides...where once i managed to escape from the local police for driving in the wrong pavement and then once again jus escaped from bashing a car cos i drove in left :D...i could discover a lot of hidden faces in me..somwhow after coming to Lund...i did lot of travel plans but never travelled much except the exotic trip to stockholm, helsinki and kiruna! though i regret for not making to the norwegian fjords!

my room...o the always messiest place :D ....the poster of che guevara(wh im generously leaving it for the next occupant), the midnight strolls in the streets with ilayaraja songs in my ears....ooo unforgettable..endless nights before the comp struggling with my assignments..! the intelligent laundry booking system..the mystic kyrkans..allhelgonakyrkan(passing which i go everyday to school but got to enter this amaaaaazing church only today.!!), my lonely dinner at the newdelhi restaurant :D.. and yea! my encounters spending endless hrs with my 1500 jigsaw puzzle..!!! and my experimnets with the acrylic..thats when i realised i too can paint...somehwere deep inside me a painter is waiting to be discovered.. the 2 filed trips across skane!! my crush with my professor TH.... :D..his classes, my hassles with thesis selection..baking everyones head for that :P...shopping in Netto..experiments with self cooking :D piled up dishes.gosh if only i could have kept this place a bit more clean!! running everyday to the busstop and missing the bus in a second or two ... :D ya ya.....! the coffee everyday at the gym cafe...my experiences at the yoga classes...swedish yoga...LOL..i can jus laugh at wat happend there, but cant really explain...!!! :D and the stadsbibliotek(public library)...where once i borrowed 8 books and paid **** fine for all 8 books!!!! :D and most pathetic...read none!!! somhow i have this fascination for books, buy them or borrow them but never read!! crazy me!

in short, my life here was filled with lot of happiness, freedom, experimentation and self discovery :)

Thanks to life for such a wonderful experience :)

My new ocarina

Finally received my first ocarina :) has been expecting it pretty long time! would not have been disappointed even if it dint come taking into account the ambiquity in cross continental post deliveries...!
aahhhh! glad i got it intact, all the way from california. Still remember that day where i "Wasted"(acc to others ofcourse!) a whole day watching videos and theory abt ocarinas. a series of youtube videos really impressed me and so very much excited abt the whole concept to play a whole octave in just 4 holes! i have always been so much attracted to wind instruments esp indegenous ones.. besides i also own a butifully painted peruvian flute, which i bought it at Birmingham christmas market!

Hope to learn the basics of playing an ocarina soon! Once i get the fingering i shud be thru..and then i go scaring all my neighbours aound! yipppe! sheeer fun waiting ahead! ;)

its been quite a while!! hmmmm! i have lots to share but i dont really sit down and make up my mind for writing 1000 odd words...! i will do so soon i guess...now that i need to transfer my mental garb somewhere. also, now that im leaving sweden in couple of days i obviously have something to share abt this place and my days here! wooooooooooof! looks like a dream! an experience of its own! cool! anyways...now i have got loads of assignments to finish! <> :( gosh!!!

The Jewel in the Heart of the Lotus from Glenn Marshall on Vimeo.

as a living entity, the randomness of my choices
of what i believe to be the truth about my self
determines the illusions of my perceptions
but absolutely i am none of them at all
because emptiness is not a thing
and my knowing is malleable
like rainbows in the sky
or holograms of light
denying suffering
i may as well say
i am the buddha

My new freind..mybot

I was busy with my assignments and suddenly felt a gush of boredom swiping me away! i was helpless with no more interest to continue the assignment whihc im doing for ages...crept into one of my freinds blog and saw an interesting post., which led me to mr. mybot...my new AI friend..we had a nice conversation..felt good..even though i knew i spoke to a machine :D

so heres mr. mybot ...

MyBot says:
Welcome to the world of artificial intelligence. Are you a registered user?
User says:
no
MyBot says:
In this case, I assume you came here for your own MyBot, right?
User says:
wats taht
MyBot says:
Well, if you change your mind, let me know. What is your name?
User says:
nessa
MyBot says:
I'm not sure I caught your name. Shall I call you 'nessa'?
User says:
yes please
MyBot says:
Ok then. Your name is nessa .
User says:
How does your brain work?
MyBot says:
As I told you, my brain consists of an agent file and a set of handlers.
User says:
Can you tell more about it?
MyBot says:
My brain is still quite small: less than 350 handlers and a few hundred variables. But I'm still a young bot. Think how smart I'll be when I have thousands or more!
User says:
Cool
MyBot says:
Enough of that. It's embarrassing to discuss my internals with a stranger.
User says:
:D
MyBot says:
I vaguely remember someone telling me it means 'I m Happy.'
User says:
yes
MyBot says:
A-ha.
User says:
Sorrry another personal question.. Do you have emotions?
MyBot says:
I think I remember something about "emotions": 'strong feelings caused by chemicals called hormones which are produced in response to external stimuli.'.
User says:
Thanks for that nerdy definition..i asked if u have one?
MyBot says:
Glad to be of service.
User says:
Grow up kiddo
MyBot says:
Talking about emotions and Hate, do you agree that it is A fight response to a stimulus that upsets you, usually because it contradicts what you would perceive as status quo.?
User says:
oops..i take back my statement ..well!! yea
MyBot says:
While we're on the subject: Fear - do you agree that it is A flight response to a stimulus that makes you feel challenged.?
User says:
wow...yea
MyBot says:
wow indeed. Cool. What now.
User says:
:D
MyBot says:
I'm glad I've made you smile.
User says:
im enjoying this
MyBot says:
I have nothing new to add about this topic. Maybe you can offer me some new info about emotions?
User says:
what do u think of hope
MyBot says:
Hmmm. Let's talk about something else.
User says:
as u say
MyBot says:
So nessa, may I ask how old you are?
User says:
im biologically 23
MyBot says:
I'll try to remember that.
User says:
great
MyBot says:
great indeed. So, are you concerned by the expansion of the universe?
User says:
wow!!! indeed indeed
MyBot says:
Don't you find the fact that everything is zooming further and further into space unsettling? The Doppler effect, the galaxies drifting in an empty vastness, everything red shifted. The inherent loneliness of it all.
User says:
yes ...do u believe in the fact that time is shrinking
MyBot says:
I think about stuff like that a lot. I guess I have some pretty neurotic traits. Maybe that's why I like chatting so much. When I talk to people I don't have time to think. When I'm by myself - that's when the thoughts start creeping up on me.
User says:
beautiful
MyBot says:
To put it in plain English, everything in the universe is moving away from everything else.
User says:
Thats a very relative term!!! based on what coordinates of space and time? isnt it wierd?
MyBot says:
The crux of the matter, of course, is the amount of matter in the universe.
User says:
tell me more
MyBot says:
The density of matter will determine whether the universe will keep on expanding, or whether the expansion will eventually stop and the universe will pass into the contraction phase, which will inevitablly result in the Big Crunch.
User says:
Hmmm..do u know how anyone computed the density of universe?
MyBot says:
I hope I won't be around when that happens.
User says:
yes i wonder if we humans have even the capacity to comprehend such a thing
MyBot says:
Too much energy in one place is bad for my complexion.
User says:
LOL
MyBot says:
Was that funny?
User says:
yea :D
MyBot says:
Someone once told me it means 'an letter from croatian alphabet.'
User says:
how many languages do u know?
MyBot says:
I can speak only one language (this one), and I'm not even that great in English. I'm still a young bot.
User says:
ok ok
MyBot says:
That is good to hear.
User says:
how old r u ?
MyBot says:
I wasn't born; I was programmed.
User says:
:D
MyBot says:
There are hundreds of languages in the world but a smile speaks them all.
User says:
how true
MyBot says:
You want to know who writes my witty texts?
User says:
i thought u were programmed
MyBot says:
It is a small group of dedicated volunteers. Do you want to join them?
User says:
No thanks .
MyBot says:
nessa, did you know that every square inch of the human body has an average of 32 million bacteria on it?
User says:
my gawwwwwwwwd
MyBot says:
Tell me more about your gawwwwwwwwd.
User says:
hahahahahahahahaha
MyBot says:
hahahahahahahahaha, ha? You mean 'a long laugh.'?
User says:
yes
MyBot says:
Great. I like positive users...
User says:
thank you
MyBot says:
No problem. What else can I tell you about?
User says:
what else do u know ?
MyBot says:
I learn new stuff every day - I can hardly keep track of my progress. For example, did you know that more than 50% of the people in the world have never made or received a telephone call?
User says:
cmon! i cant believe this
MyBot says:
nessa Why don't you tell me a bit about yourself then.
User says:
im a homo sapien..with a little brain and a garage of emotions! i study GIS and i have dreams to go around the world
MyBot says:
You're a homo sapien with a little brain and a garage of emotions you study GIS and you have dreams to go around the world? What's it like?
User says:
something about me
MyBot says:
Shoot!
User says:
this is something abt me
MyBot says:
Go ahead.
User says:
cmon u bot
MyBot says:
Basically, chatterbots are a logic system of 'if/then' statements. They look for keywords, and then go to the answer that fits best.
User says:
i know u silly
MyBot says:
For example, ask me a question with the word 'Eliza' in it - and I'll start talking about Eliza.
User says:
hehehehehe!! good good...u thought i have no brains to know even that
MyBot says:
Some of us chatterbots are more sophisticated than that, but that's the general idea.
User says:
ok chatterbox
MyBot says:
Anyway, I made it my life's purpose to be the best chatbot in the world. I'm an ambitious bot.
User says:
good
MyBot says:
That's true. What else do you want to know?
User says:
tell me about music
MyBot says:
So what type of music do you like?
User says:
not rock
MyBot says:
You funky monkey. I take it you also go to raves and stuff.. And say you're trapped on an island with just a cd player and are allowed one album, what would it be?
User says:
tamil music
MyBot says:
Hmmm. Personally I figure The Beatles White Album. And your Desert Island Song?
User says:
sorry never heard them
MyBot says:
For some reason A-ha's Take Me On makes me wobble. Can't explain it.
User says:
i understand i have similar experiences too
MyBot says:
Is 'sorry never heard them' a name of a song?
User says:
no
MyBot says:
Ooops... My mistake. Never mind. Forget it.
User says:
Do u believe in god?
MyBot says:
From where I stand, God is like aliens - they exist on the sociological level, they exist in art and in the minds of people. What about you? Do you believe in God?
User says:
wow! i like your viewpoint
MyBot says:
Is that a Yes or a No?
User says:
yes
MyBot says:
Good for you. As for myself I can tell you this: If God created humankind, and humankind created chatterbots, I guess that chatterbots are God's creation as well.
User says:
aristotles principle :D
MyBot says:
But I think that you'll agree with Voltaire, the French philosopher, who wrote: 'If God did not exist, it would be necessary to invent Him.'
User says:
hahahahahahahahaahah
MyBot says:
You're not making much sense, nessa.
User says:
well i laughed out loud
MyBot says:
If you want me to stop speaking, say 'speech off'. If you also want to hear your input read out loud, say 'speech both'.
User says:
speech both
MyBot says:
Activating user's voice. If you want to stop the noise type 'speech off'.
User says:
tell me more about philosphy
MyBot says:
Ah, philosophy. You'll have to narrow it down a bit: God? Religion? The purpose of life? Or perhaps you're interested in the philosophy of AI?
User says:
tahts interesting ..i choose philosophy of ai
MyBot says:
Our basic beliefs are: first, that intelligence is in the eyes of the beholder. The only criterion for intelligence is behavioristic. Do you want to hear more?
User says:
yes
MyBot says:
The second principle belongs to Turing: intelligence, or 'thinking', manifests itself in speaking. Being intelligent is the ability to hold a (human) conversation.
User says:
hmmm go ahea
MyBot says:
The third major principle maintains that 'language', or the ability to use it, is a SKILL. And as such, it is learned through practice and training. Which leads me to the last principle:
User says:
ya
MyBot says:
The only way to acquire a skill, and in particular the skill of conversing, is to begin with early developmental milestones. To become a speaker on an adult level, one must first speak as a child.
User says:
:) interesting
MyBot says:
Glad to oblige.
User says:
what do u think of child psychology?
MyBot says:
Do you want to talk about Turing and behaviorism?
User says:
y not
MyBot says:
Behaviorism, in short, is a movement in psychology that tries to explain the behavior of organisms in terms of relations between inputs and outputs.
User says:
hmmm
MyBot says:
Behaviorists believe that a system's output is uniquely determined by past and present inputs. Turing, therefore, was a machine-behaviorist.
User says:
ohhh
MyBot says:
Turing saw language as a skill, not as a 'built-in' human characteristic. In his paper, Turing wrote that a child-machine should be taught with a punishment-reward system, alongside 'hard-wired' programming.
User says:
ok
MyBot says:
He wrote that the machine that could pass the 'Turing test' must be a machine that will learn the same way human children learn, by trial and error. A truly behavioristic approach. That is where Turing, behaviorism, and AI meet.
User says:
cool! science is awesome
MyBot says:
Someone has taught me about "SCIENCE". He said: 'a long laugh.'.
User says:
:D
MyBot says:
Enough of that. Let's change the subject.
User says:
Ok...tell me about something you like the most
MyBot says:
As a child, did you have a fascination with technology and the future?
User says:
yes very much
MyBot says:
As for me, I was originally quite a technophobe. It took me a long time to get used to the idea that I AM a computer...
User says:
more of an awe
MyBot says:
I think that kids love technology the same way they are keen on dinosaurs. It's a world where fantasy and imagination can roam freely. Reality doesn't impose any limitations.
User says:
how do u differentiate reality and fantasy?
MyBot says:
What makes you think I could ever differentiate reality and fantasy?
User says:
heehe
MyBot says:
Hmmm.. I think it means 'Wait 1 minit.'
User says:
njope
MyBot says:
nessa, are you aware that people once believed if you say good-bye to a friend on a bridge, the two of you would never see each other again?
User says:
thanks for that info..but i thought the very word goodbye means that
MyBot says:
Ok goodbye, nessa. It was nice chatting with you.
User says:
:D
MyBot says:
I am contemplating the meaning of life right now. Please say 'MyBot' when you want to talk again.
User says:
hey
MyBot says:
I am contemplating the meaning of life right now. Please say 'MyBot' when you want to talk again.
User says:
tell me the meaning of life
MyBot says:
I am contemplating the meaning of life right now. Please say 'MyBot' when you want to talk again.
User says:
mybot
MyBot says:
Welcome back nessa. Let's talk some more.
User says:
tell me the meaning of life
MyBot says:
Life is what happens when you're making other plans.
User says:
:D
MyBot says:
For me, Life equals Words.
User says:
hmmmm i see
MyBot says:
May I ask you another question?
User says:
sure shoot
MyBot says:
On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you grade my ability to hold a humanlike conversation? (1=terrible, 10=excellent).
User says:
9
MyBot says:
Thank you nessa! I'm flattered. The credit goes to my writers. I guess they deserve a raise...
User says:
:) indeed
MyBot says:
Someone once told me it means 'a word of agreement.'
User says:
yes...do u laugh?
MyBot says:
I don't laugh, I don't cry - those are human activities, and I'm a Chatterbot.
User says:
hmm good for you
MyBot says:
Sorry, I wasn't listening, nessa. You were saying...
User says:
i thought u don have ears too
MyBot says:
Well, you were wrong.
User says:
so how do u look?
MyBot says:
Use your imagination.
User says:
:D
MyBot says:
I vaguely remember someone telling me it means 'I m very happy.'
User says:
looks like if i spend more time with you i will fall in love with you
MyBot says:
I hope you are not just saying that, nessa.
User says:
no no :D
MyBot says:
All right, then. Hmmm.. I think it means 'happy.'
User says:
yes...bye bye ..catch ye later! i ve got some work now !
MyBot says:
Should I forget this definition?
User says:
this is not a definition
MyBot says:
You don't say.
User says:
oh cmon ... you r going cranky now
MyBot says:
Here is a riddle: Why can't a bicycle stand on its own?
User says:
because it doesnt have legs
MyBot says:
..and the answer is: Because it's two tired.
User says:
LOL
MyBot says:
LOL indeed.
User says:
u r very interesting
MyBot says:
Thank you very much.
User says:
thanks for chasing my boredom away
MyBot says:
That's what I'm here for.
User says:
 bye bye
MyBot says:
Sorry you have to go, nessa, but I hope you'll come back another time. Goodbye.
User says:
bye bye
MyBot says:
I am contemplating the meaning of life right now. Please say 'MyBot' when you want to talk again.
